Desktop virtualization enables apparel major to adopt ERP cost effectively

As a brand synonymous with high quality cotton apparel, our customer had carved out a unique niche for themselves across the country. An unwavering focus on quality, ethical business practices and concern for the environment propelled their growth over the years.  To better manage their growth, they had finalized on one of the big name ERP vendors to  implement and manage structured systems and processes. However, the roadblock in their ERP deployment initiative turned out to be their legacy desktop infrastructure. Due to minimum system requirements, the ERP client could not be deployed on their existing desktops.

When we analyzed their IT infrastructure, we realized that while their desktops were usable for day to day tasks, they fell short of the system requirements for their ERP client. Another factor that we needed to consider was that the majority of their desktop users only needed to carry out simple, routine tasks on their PCs. While the obvious solution was to refresh their desktops with a configuration capable of supporting their ERP client rollout, this would not be an optimal use of their IT budget. With each desktop costing around INR 40,000 or more, plus attendant AMC costs, the hit on their IT budgets would be huge.

Quadra's IT infrastructure services team proposed a Hosted Shared Desktop (HSD) model to roll out their ERP application. This would enable them to leverage their existing investments in desktops, while at the same time ensuring that there would not be any system compatibility issues with their ERP roll out. With at least two years of usable life in their current desktop infrastructure, we pointed out that a HSD solution, based on Citrix XenDesktop HSD, would provide them the ideal combination of performance and ROI. Further, this solution would also enable them to access their LoB application from any device, regardless of location.

Our customer not only benefitted from a scalable and robust solution that enabled a speedy LoB application roll out, but could also leverage their existing IT investments. The added advantage in terms of seamless, yet secure access from any device or location was a boon to their workforce in remote locations, as well as to their senior management who could access their applications from any device. Significant cost savings from not having to invest in an expensive desktop refresh could now be channeled into other strategic investments, while at the same time it extended the life span of their current infrastructure. A well-managed and meticulously planned deployment ensured zero end user disruption. End user productivity needs were now well balanced with IT security and compliance concerns, while at the same time extending the boundaries of their application to any device.
